Last month, we discussed how instructors currently receive BOSU® education. While there are many great virtual resources for fitness professionals to tap into for ideas, it’s important to also consider the value of live education. With BOSU® education specifically, the number one advantage of attending live education with us is learning a system for teaching exercises vs. learning an endless string of a-la-carte exercises that might be interesting, but ineffective when sequenced or presented inadequately.
I often walk into a club and see a stack of BOSU® Balance Trainers sitting on a rack with no one making use of this amazing tool. When I inquire, I am usually told something like this: “One or two trainers used to use the equipment, but they are not here any longer,” or “We use them a little bit, but there is only so much you can do with it.” The problem isn’t lack of information being available, but no systematic approach to learning, using, and passing along the information from ‘generation’ to generation.
As we talked about in last month’s blog, trainers and instructors often look to social media, YouTube, books, and even one another to learn new exercises. As long as this information is credible (best to use resources officially produced by BOSU® for the best skills and drills), without knowing how to sequence, progress, regress, and link together, programming is typically less than effective. I appreciate trainers and instructors taking an interest in adding more exercises to their toolbox. But, wouldn’t these exercises be more useful if you knew the best way to put it all together?
You’ve probably heard the old adage: “If you give a man a fish, he has food for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he has food for a lifetime.” Fitness education should be regarded in the same way. Instructors and trainers are being served (and they’re searching for) lots of fish; but few actually know how to cook! Not only is this less than ideal for the longevity of a fitness professional, but it’s important for the sake of the participant.
Most instructors and trainers have completed lengthy certification courses that cover anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology. Fitness professionals are then asked to pass an exam to showcase competency in general fitness programming. Once completed, we are educated to teach or train clients, but these certification courses do not educate trainers or instructors on the proper techniques for teaching exercises on specialized equipment like the BOSU® Balance Trainer or Ballast® Ball. Education to use this specific equipment is separate and considered a “specialty.” And, if a fitness pro is using a product, he/she should feel compelled to learn more about the specific product.
So what makes BOSU® “specialty” education special? The BOSU® Balance Trainer is a valuable physical training tool. We know that if used properly it can generate incredible results for a client. But what makes for an outstanding BOSU® instructor? A great BOSU® instructor knows how to properly sequence exercise for best benefit, how to select the most appropriate exercises for the audience, how to progress, regress, or change an exercise on the spot to help members feel most successful, and how to coach versus play follow the leader.
BOSU® Courses like the BOSU® Complete Workout System 8-Hour Certification, do not just teach the theory, science, practical application and modifications of BOSU® exercises, but the course focuses on actual coaching technique. During the course, each participant is given the opportunity to teach BOSU® exercises to other participants. They are also encouraged to apply modifications and variables to each exercise in order to feel more confident teaching to all levels. BOSU® certification courses aren’t just comprised of lectures and demonstrations. Trainers and instructors are observed and coached through the course on ways to improve the way they lead an exercise. All of these components are put together in a comprehensive course that gives fitness professionals a process or system for creating a successful workout experience for their clients. The objective is to have instructors that not only feel confident using the BOSU® Balance Trainer, but also in their ability to coach a client or class successfully.
Here is what we know:
- Learning just one or two exercises doesn’t give trainers or instructors any kind of coaching training and ultimately the trainer will run out of ideas and lose interest.
- The BOSU® Certification Courses give trainers a system for creating an unlimited number of safe and effective exercises.
- Learning exercises from the internet or a book doesn’t teach a fitness pro how to coach that exercise effectively.
- The BOSU® Complete Workout System focuses on teaching better coaching skills so trainers feel more confident.
- Learning one exercise at a time gives you one exercise that you may “re-heat and serve” a few times.
- Obtaining a BOSU® Specialty Certification fills the trainer toolbox for a lifetime.
